Historical society sets meeting

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will offer a presentation titled "Stories Radiating From the One-Room Schools in Conestoga, PA - 1850s to the 1950s" when it meets on Saturday, March 8. The program will begin at 9 a.m. in the Millersville Borough Administration & Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

This event will be the final of three presentations focused on one-room schools that MAHS scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.

Retired teacher and author Ronald B. Walton will lead the discussion. Using pictures, documents, and artifacts from the three historic one-room schools in Conestoga, Walton will recount stories of the schools. Handouts will be available, and a question-and-answer session will close the meeting.

Walton and his wife, Beverly, are the owners of the 1850 East Centre Schoolhouse in Conestoga; Walton's family is only the second owner of the 175-year-old school, which is connected to four generations of the family. A graduate of Millersville University, Walton coauthored "Reflections of a Country Village - A History of Conestoga 1805-1980" and compiled and authored "Conestoga Heritage Cooking 1880s -1950s."

Although admission is free, donations will be accepted. For more details, contact one of the co-chairs: Phil Gerber, MAHS president, at 717-872-8837 before noon or at pge8507@aol.com or Kathy Brabson, MAHS secretary, at 717-682-5903 or at kathybrabson@comcast.net.
