History Enthusiasts Gather For Civil War Weekend

The Solanco Historical Society held a Civil War Weekend encampment at the Robert Fulton Birthplace Museum and Gardens from May 20 to 22. The event nearly doubled in participants from the last time it was held, with nearly 100 participants bringing history to life this year.

Re-enactors portrayed President Lincoln and members of his family, along with Confederate president Jefferson Davis, Gen. Ulyssis S. Grant, Gen. George McClellan and others, and some of the re-enactors were from the Confederation of Union Generals. Attendees of the event could take part in sit-down meetings with the generals and the Lincoln family.

The Civil War Impressionists Association participated in the event for the first time, with some members traveling from Virginia and other mid-Atlantic states. Members portrayed historical figures and re-created historical events, such as the meeting of President Lincoln and Gen. McClellan at Antietam.

Military camps were set up on the lower lawn. The 1st West Virginia was the headquarters for the Union camps, which included the 45th, 61st and 97th Pennsylvania. New this year, the 45th displayed a Gatling gun, and horses were on the premises with the 1st West Virginia Cavalry.

Along the main sidewalk from the Fulton home were Bruce Mowday, author and historian; the Sons of Confederate Veterans; Walter Bosch with the Invalid Corps; and Billy's Hats. Frank Vattelana was located inside the house, displaying his collection of Civil War photography.

Throughout the weekend, visitors could eat food from Old Iron Grill and tour the Fulton home.
