History Programs Planned

September's Special Subject tour will be "Miss Hetty Parker: Buchanan's Venerable and Pious Housekeeper," presented on Saturday, Sept. 3. Tours will be available on the hour, beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing until the last tour at 3 p.m. The program will focus on the life and experiences of Miss Esther "Hetty" Parker, head housekeeper of Wheatland, including her youth, how she first met James Buchanan, and how she managed Wheatland, the White House, and the rearing of Harriet Lane and Buck Henry. Advance reservations are highly recommended as tours may sell out and walk-in tickets may not be available. Members will receive complimentary admission but must reserve their tickets in advance.

The Friends of the Tanger Arboretum will offer "Historical Trees of Lancaster County," presented by Len Eiserer, on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. Attendees will learn about local and still-living trees with connections to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, a 19th-century samurai, a Pennsylvania cavalry officer who served under George Washington, a Civil War officer who graduated from Franklin & Marshall College, and other historical events and people. Tickets are free, and advance reservations are highly recommended. Walk-in tickets are not guaranteed. Ticketholders should check in at LancasterHistory's museum before proceeding into the auditorium in Ryder Hall.

Music on the Lawn will be offered on Sept. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m., featuring local band Abigail's Garden performing funky folk, Celtic, and original music. Tickets are free for LancasterHistory members and for children age 17 and under, with a fee for nonmembers age 18 and up. Tickets are available in advance and may also be available at the door. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, foldable chairs, and picnics. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome. In the event of inclement weather, the decision to postpone will be made at noon on Sept. 10 and ticketholders will be notified. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 11, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Local author and journalist Jack Brubaker will present "Veteran Reconciliation After the Civil War" on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at LancasterHistory. The doors will open and online registration will close at 6:30 p.m. The program will also be streamed online. Brubaker will speak on his latest publication, "Sons of East Tennessee: Civil War Veterans Divided and Reconciled," which is the story of two East Tennessee fathers on opposite sides of the war in a deeply divided section of the country who met and reconciled at the graves of their sons. Brubaker will also discuss the process of reconciliation as it played out in Lancaster and the rest of the country. The program is free and open to the public but requires advance registration for both in-person and virtual attendees. Due to capacity restrictions, tickets may not be available at the door. The online version of this program will be recorded and uploaded to LancasterHistory's YouTube channel. Prior to Sept. 15, attendees should confirm the location of this event as it may change due to community health concerns.

Penn State University professor Amy Greenberg will present "James Buchanan at Bedford Springs" on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. Greenberg will discuss Buchanan's connection with Bedford Springs and its role in his political life. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The program is free and open to the public but requires advance registration. Registration will close online on Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets may not be available at the door. Prior to Sept. 22, attendees should confirm the location of this event as it may change due to community health concerns.
