Homestead opens for season

The Herr Family Homestead, located in Amos Herr Park at 1756 Nissley Road, Landisville, will offer guided tours of the home and barn every second and fourth Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. through October. The last tour will begin at 3:15 p.m. There is no admission charge, but donations will be accepted.

Visitors may view three hooked rugs that were made by Alice Herr Zander in Lancaster County in the late 19th or early 20th century. The rugs were donated to the Herr Homestead in memory of Zander's great-grandson Robert Christian Pfahl Jr. and his family.

Zander created more than 2,000 hooked rugs over 72 years and attributed her zest for living to her interest in rug making. The rugs on display at the Herr house are unusual, as they have geometric designs rather than Zander's typical flower and leaf patterns.

Zander's rugs were previously part of a 2007 exhibition titled "Rags to Rugs: Hooked and Handsewn Rugs of Pennsylvania," which resulted from research that the Heritage Center of Lancaster County conducted from 2004 to 2006. Information about the rugs is available in the exhibition catalog written by Patricia T. Herr, who also published a book titled "Rags to Rugs" in 2008.
