Hoover wins teaching award

Bruce Hoover received a 2023 Christian Teacher of the Year Award from the Herzog Foundation at the organization's annual gala on Sept. 30 in Washington, D.C. The Christian Teacher of the Year awards are part of the Herzog Foundation's Excellence in Christian Education award series. Hoover was one of 12 instructors nationwide to receive the award this year.

Hoover teaches American history at Anchor Christian Academy, a secondary University-Model school located on the east side of Lancaster. Known for his dynamic teaching style, Hoover offers his students numerous immersive experiences throughout the school year, including a fall trip to sites related to the French and Indian War and an outdoor demonstration of early American farming implements. In class, Hoover frequently portrays historical figures, and the relics that fill his classroom shelves rotate throughout the year depending on the time periods he is teaching about. The eighth-grade class culminates with a spring trip to Gettysburg. Dressed in Civil War era clothing, Hoover guides his students as they hike and bike the path of the battle. This hands-on experience gives students a sense of connection to history and illustrates the importance of community as they camp and hike together for three days.

Anchor Christian Academy will hold a reception to celebrate Hoover's award and his 45 years of teaching. Former students and co-workers who would like to attend may contact office@anchorpa.org for details.
