Surprising Lepidoptera: Amazing Facts About Butterflies and Moths will be offered both in person and virtually. The in-person program will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m., and the virtual program will occur via Zoom on Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Topics will include physical structures of lepidoptera, recent scientific studies, and various species' unique behaviors. The in-person presentation will be followed by a tour of pollinator-friendly spaces at the Horn Farm Center and a moth-sheet lighting. The virtual program will be followed by a question-and-answer period.

Wild Abundance: Late Summer Foraging Walk will be held on Sunday, Sept. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon. Attendees will learn about local plant ecology, wild edibles, and alternative uses for plants. The program will emphasize ethical foraging and ways of giving back to the land. Beginners and experienced foragers are welcome. Young children accompanying an adult may attend without charge.

Backyard Composting will be offered on Tuesday, Sept. 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in partnership with the York County Solid Waste Authority. Participants will choose a site for a new compost pile, construct a bin, add leaves and kitchen scraps, mix a pre-existing pile, and see an active pile that is late in the decomposition process. Additional topics will include uses for finished compost, vermicomposting, mulching methods, and grasscycling or ways to reduce yard waste.

Horn Farm will host Intro to Power Tools on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Topics will include how to measure and mark wood; the functions and operation of a drill and driver; making cuts with a circular saw, a miter saw, or a jig saw; settings, blades, and applications for each tool; and other common household tools. The class plan is subject to change. Participants may take home their own speed square and carpenter's pencil. Attendees should pack a lunch and snacks; a refrigerator and microwave will be available to use.

Fall Container Gardening for Pollinators will take place on Sept. 7 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. It will focus on ways humans can help migratory insects and birds to sustain their long flights. Pollinator Steward Heather Andrews will share about host plants for native butterflies and moths, specific plants that may attract the maximal amount of pollinator activity, and how delaying spring cleanup can help overwintering pollinators and other creatures. She will create two demonstration pots designed to attract migratory butterflies and hummingbirds. At the end of the presentation, attendees may select three native plants to take home.
