Hummelstown Invites Residents, Business Owners To See Their Names In Bricks

Hummelstown-area residents and businesses owners have an opportunity to permanently inscribe their names on bricks that will be placed in one of the area's parks.

As part of the Hummelstown Parks Brick Fundraiser, individuals or families may purchase a brick, which they can engrave with their family name or designate in honor of or in memory of their loved ones. The bricks are designed to be a lasting tribute to local residents, along with their children, grandchildren, parents, other relatives or friends whose names they may choose to include on the bricks. Bricks may also be purchased by businesses, but only the business name will be included.

Each brick will have three lines, with a maximum of 15 characters per line, which includes spaces and punctuation.

Those who purchase a brick can choose to have it placed at one of three Hummelstown parks - the Marion F. Alexander Park, located near the entrance to the Graystone Farms Development at 109 Graystone Drive; the Herbert A. Schaffner Memorial Park, located on Parkside Avenue; or the Barry E. Mehaffie Memorial Park, located at 633 W. High St.

"(The bricks) will go along the sidewalk in the parks," explained Kelly Williamson, chairperson of the recreation board. "Alexander and Mehaffie both have some bricks in already. There are concrete sidewalks, and along the sides they (added bricks when the parks were constructed)."

The engraved bricks are scheduled to be put into place in the spring of 2022. "Hopefully, we will get at least 20 for each park," Williamson said, noting that children may especially enjoy seeing bricks with their names on them as they visit the parks to play.

The brick promotion is being sponsored by the Hummelstown Recreation Board and the Hummelstown Community Foundation. "The foundation does a lot of events for the community," said Williamson, foundation secretary. "We added flags in the square. We close down the main street and run the Halloween parade. Right now, we are getting ready for our Winter Fling that we do in January."

All money raised by the brick fundraiser will go to the upkeep, repair and replacement of playground equipment in the parks. "All three parks have playground equipment in them," Williamson noted. "We have replaced some (equipment) already, but we are working (to do more)."

"The maintenance guys keep the parks nice, and volunteers tend the flower beds," she added.
