Hummelstown-area residents will have an opportunity to learn about local nonprofit organizations while enjoying food, music and games during Connecting Our Community, a free event that is set for Saturday, May 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Schaffner Park, located on Parkside Avenue in Hummelstown.

During the event, which is being presented by the Hummelstown Community Foundation, more than 20 groups will set up informational tables in the park. Attendees will also be about to learn about volunteer opportunities with the various organizations.

"People can know what is available to help them and (also) see if they have something they would like to do for the nonprofits," said Kelly Williamson, foundation secretary. "It will be both educational and fun. We tried to get as many (local) organizations as possible to participate."

Among the nonprofit organizations that are scheduled to have representatives at the event are American Legion Post 265 and Auxiliary, Deep Rivers Church, the Elder Express, Hummelstown FFO Bulldogs, Hummelstown Business and Professional Association, Hummelstown Area Historical Society, Hummelstown Police Department, Hummelstown Fire Department, Life Lion Emergency Medical Services and Critical Care, Hummelstown Parks and Recreation, Hummelstown Public Works, Lower Dauphin Communities That Care and the Bookmobile, Lower Dauphin Youth Falcon Football, Love INC of Greater Hershey, Penn State Master Gardeners, the Rotary Club of Hummelstown, the Shade Tree Commission, Shepherd's Closet clothing bank, the William H. & Marion C. Alexander Family Library and the Hummelstown Baseball Softball Association.

Food trucks that will be on hand include Forrest's Feed Co., Chef Tony, Chocolates by Tina Marie, Bricker's Famous French Fries and Sweet Dawgs Frozen Desserts. Music will be provided by DJ Bill Runkle. At 6 p.m., there will be a performance by the Lower Dauphin Middle School jazz band on the park's stage.

The Hummelstown Fire Company and Police Department will also be on hand with emergency vehicles, including two fire trucks, an antique fire truck and a police car.

The pavilion in the park will be available for people to eat dinner, and the park's playground will also be open.

Other featured attractions will a rock climbing wall, cornhole and games. "The only thing (to purchase) is the food. Everything is free," Williamson said.

In the event of inclement weather, Connecting Our Community will be held on Sunday, May 21, from 4 to 7 p.m.
