Ice cream social will benefit historical society

Head out to the Manheim Historical Society on Aug. 20, and you can enjoy a sweet treat while supporting the organization's mission.

An ice cream social will be held at the Manheim Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St., from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20.

The admission charge entitles people to a bowl of ice cream and a variety of toppings, said Susan Williams, president of the historical society.

"We will have members of the Manheim Central Barons football team as our 'celebrity' dippers," she noted. "We'll be offering vanilla, chocolate and black raspberry ice cream, and then we'll have some football players manning the table with sauces and sprinkles."

She is working with the Manheim Central High School band director to coordinate live music from an ensemble of students at the event as well.

"We're excited to bring in the students from the football team and the band, because this is showing how young people can support the historical society," she remarked.

Along with ice cream, the event will feature tours of the train station, including the Henry William Stiegel exhibit and model railroad display; trolley rides; and an opportunity to win a custom piece created by Stiegel Glassworks.

"We'll be doing a giveaway of a Baron gnome made for us," Williams said, noting that people can buy tickets for the giveaway at the event. "It's made out of glass in the colors of maroon and gray."

Tours of the historical society's other properties, the 18th-century Fasig and Keath homes on East High Street, will also be offered during the event.

The ice cream social is a fundraiser for the historical society, which provides programs and activities that promote the history of Manheim. The organization held its first ice cream social pre-pandemic, and Williams said organizers are looking forward to bringing the event back.

"We invite everybody to come out and enjoy some ice cream and see what we have to offer," she said. "We really enjoy providing this program for people to come out and see our historical society."
