Individuals Honored For Contributions To Schools, Community

The Donegal Athletic Club recently announced that six people have been added to the Donegal Memorial Monument, located outside the Donegal Athletic Complex. The monument recognizes individuals who have made a great impact serving the Donegal School District or the community at large.

The honorees for 2020 are the late Bernard "Bernie" Thome, the late Barry Etsell and William "Bump" Yohe; these recognitions were delayed due to the pandemic. The honorees for 2021 are the late Vera Albert, Linda Good and Ron Wagner.

Among many other community contributions, Thome was a longtime educator at Donegal, who was primarily responsible for the development of youth soccer for the Donegal community. Thome made sure that any youth player who wanted to play soccer received his or her own soccer ball to help him or her get started.

Etsell's contributions included decades of commitment to the Mount Joy Athletic Association (MJAA), coaching for MJAA and serving youth baseball and softball players in the Mount Joy area.

Yohe contributed to the development and growth of baseball and softball in Marietta through the Marietta Youth Athletic Association, serving for decades as a coach and administrator for the organization. Yohe also coached many kids in youth football for the Donegal Braves.

Albert was also a longtime educator in the Donegal School District and was also mostly responsible for the development and growth of the Mount Joy Historical Society. Albert authored and published many books related to the history of the community.

Good had a long career as a teacher at Maytown Elementary. Her passion and commitment to the Maytown community were also demonstrated through the sharing of her family farm with generations of students to teach them about the rich history and impact of agriculture in the community. She has also been involved with the celebration of May Day in Maytown each spring.

Wagner served young baseball players in the Mount Joy area through the MJAA. He spent over four decades as a coach and an administrator and later as an umpire, providing several generations of players opportunities to play organized baseball.
