KCVPS Releases Booklet About Hallam

The Kreutz Creek Valley Preservation Society (KCVPS) presented a copy of its recently printed booklet "Hallam in 1921 - A Glimpse of the Past" to the Hallam Borough Council on May 10 to commemorate the past 100 years of Hallam's history.

In creating the booklet, KCVPS compared the Hallam of today to the Hallam of 1921, as described in an article written that year by Mrs. S. A. Snyder, a newspaper correspondent. Mrs. Snyder, married to pastor Samuel Snyder, was also branch secretary of the United Evangelical Church Conference's Women's Missionary Society.

The new booklet includes photographs, comments on current locations, dates for some of the references and corrections to some misinformation in the 1921 article. Topics of the new booklet include how Hallam was named, industries, business establishments, railroad station activity, the schoolhouse, churches, leaders of the community, older residents, physicians, the tannery and the trolley. Katina Snyder, who worked on the project, noted that many properties mentioned in Mrs. Snyder's article are still standing, although they may currently have a different purpose. Jeffrey Clinton did the layout and computer enhancement for the booklet, in addition to including some never-before-seen photographs from his private collection.

"Hallam in 1921" is available at the KCVPS museum, 5345 Lincoln Highway, York, which is open on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There are separate admission fees for KCVPS members and for nonmembers. For information on purchase the booklet by mail, email Katina Snyder at kcvps@ pa.net.

KCVPS is a nonprofit organization formed in 1986 to promote an interest in the history of Hallam Borough and Hellam Township. The organization purchased a circa 1865 one-room schoolhouse in 1997 and turned it into a museum for Hellam/Hallam artifacts and memorabilia.
