Kendig Grabs District Bronze Medal

Three Comet swimmers competed in the District Three Class 3A Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School Saturday, March 6. One brought home a medal.

Senior Wes Kendig lowered his 100-butterfly seed time of 52.97 and turned in a bronze medal performance with a 51.87.

Everett Barry, also a senior, competed in the 100 breaststroke. He also improved on his seed time and finished in 15th place.

Jayden Almodovar made his debut performance in district competition and finished 15th in the 100 butterfly. He was the only freshman to compete in that event.

"It was a great meet," said head coach Eric Urban. "Both Wes and Everett finished with lifetime bests in their events. Given the season, to have best times when it counts was a great accomplishment.

"Jayden was happy to qualify for the meet," he continued, "as this was his goal as a freshman."

WRESTLING

Penn Manor's Colt Barley punched his ticket to the PIAA Championships with a fourth-place finish at the PIAA AAA West "Super Regional" in Altoona Saturday, March 6.

The Comet senior took the long way around, working his way through the consolation brackets to extend his season. A first period escape was all Barley could muster in his 8-1 quarterfinals round loss against eventual first place finisher Ethan Rossman, of Bellefonte.

"Colt had a solid weekend," said head coach Brandon Vernalli. "He ran into some tough competition but looked tough."

He led from start to finish in his first consy round action, defeating Cedar Cliff's Isaiah Auman 8-1 to secure his spot at states. He also earned a forfeit win in the consy-semis over Carson Manville, of State College Area.

In a battle for the bronze, Barley fell behind 3-0 and was pinned in the second period by Justin Hart, of Hampton.

"Colt was wrestling tough and got caught in a cradle," recalled Vernalli. "I'd like to see him wrestle that kid again because I'm certain the outcome would be different."

The Comet senior is a returning PIAA state qualifier currently holding a 95-21 career record.

"Colt is already guaranteed a PIAA eighth place medal but I'm looking for him to place much higher," said Vernalli.

BOWLING

The Comet bowlers had two teams compete in the Eastern PA Regional Championships Friday, March 5. The boys' team competed at Leisure Lanes while the girls were at Dutch Lanes in Ephrata.

Lacey Slaymaker paced the boys' squad with a three game 649 total and a high game of 237. Derek Warfel followed with a three game 605 total while Delaney Reitnauer rolled a 504. Josh Stock and Eva Brubaker both hit 353 and Charlie Hull rounded out the action with a 339. The team finished with a 3832 total in the qualifying rounds, finding themselves in 15th place. The top three teams advanced to the stepladder finals. Exeter rolled the highest series in the championships, a 4393.

"It was a tough day," said head coach Chris Vitale. "We were inconsistent in our shot making. And Erek and Lacey were the only ones to bowl their average or better. We won states three years in a row but now we've gone three years without qualifying. Hopefully, someone will get through in singles."

The girls' team almost mirrored the boys', settling for a 16th place finish and not advancing.

Willow Hee earned the highest total for the Comets, a 453. Ariana Cuba (443), Corinne Smith (430), Hope Leaman (343) and Abigail Nesmith (241) rounded out the team scorers.
