Lafayette Bicentennial Celebration Planned

The national Lafayette Bicentennial celebration will come to West Chester and Chadds Ford on Saturday, July 26.

In 1824 and 1825, Frenchman Lafayette, a Revolutionary War American hero, returned to the United States for a 13-month tour of all 24 states. On July 26, 1825, Lafayette visited the Brandywine Battlefield, where he was wounded on Sept. 11, 1777, and West Chester, where he was given a grand dinner.

This year, a celebration will begin at 10 a.m. at Thornbury Farm, 1256 Thornbury Road, West Chester, on the Brandywine Battlefield. The program, which will include an appearance by "Lafayette," will take place at 11 a.m., followed by a heritage walk to the location where Lafayette was wounded in 1777.

During the afternoon in West Chester as part of Chester County's Town Tours & Village Walks, a walk will take place to Marshall Square Park, where Lafayette spoke in 1825. At 6 p.m., a grand Lafayette Ball will take place at the Chester County History Center.

A Lafayette re-enactor approved by the American Friends of Lafayette will take part in the programs.
