LancasterHistory has scheduled several programs. Unless otherwise noted, to register, visit http://www.lancasterhistory.org and click on "Events" or call 717-392-4633.

"Traveling Black: Race and Resistance" will take place on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. via Zoom. Author, historian, and University of Pennsylvania professor Mia Bay will present a lecture on her latest book, "Traveling Black: A Story of Race and Resistance."

After emancipation, black Americans had opportunities for free mobility in the United States. However, this mobility was hampered by contradictory rules, intimidation, court cases, and segregated modes of transportation. Bay will explore when, how, and why racial restrictions in transportation took shape in the United States and what it was like to live with them.

The program is free and open to the public but requires advance registration. Registration will close online on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 6:50 p.m.

The 18th annual Valentine's Day Celebration, a "Winter Wonderland" drop-in event, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. at LancasterHistory. In lieu of the traditional indoor gala, LancasterHistory will set up outdoor fire rings, where attendees can enjoy s'mores and pop-up entertainment. The cost of a ticket includes a goodie bag containing a limited-edition beanie hat, glassware and stickers.

Proceeds will support education and public history programs at LancasterHistory. For more information and to register by Monday, Feb. 7, visit http://www.lancasterhistory.org/valentines.

"Buchanan's Presidency: The Challenges of 1857," a special guided tour of Wheatland, will be held on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 21. Tours will be available on the half hour, beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing until the last tour at 3 p.m.

Attendees will learn about the challenges faced by 15th President James Buchanan during his first 10 months in office. Topics will include Buchanan's role in the Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision, why Buchanan chose to send the Army to the Utah Territory, and how he handled the petition for Kansas' statehood. Attendees should note that these tours are not Wheatland's regular general admission tours.

Advance reservations are highly recommended as walk-in tickets may not be available. Members will receive complimentary admission but must reserve tickets in advance.

After being closed to the public throughout January, all operations will reopen to the public on Wednesday, Feb. 2. Hours will be Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours of Wheatland will be available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Capacity is limited, and reservations are recommended.
