Landis Valley posts summer institute classes

Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum will offer the summer term of the Institute at Landis Valley for lifelong learners. The mission of Landis Valley is to preserve and share the history and material culture of the Pennsylvania Germans.

The institute's summer term, from Friday to Sunday, July 5 to 7, will offer seven classes and a lecture. Participants may choose from classes that vary in length from one to three days. Among the offerings is a three-day workshop exploring how flax growing in the field is transformed into fabric. Other classes will include theorem painting; basket weaving; De Schtaan, a Pennsylvania German form of embroidery using a tin form; false grain painting; and fraktur. There will also be a lecture and book signing with Cindy Conner, author of "Homegrown Flax and Cotton: DIY Guide to Growing, Processing, Spinning & Weaving Fiber to Cloth."

Experts in individual disciplines will teach all workshops. Each day will start with time to meet with other participants while enjoying coffee and doughnuts.
