LCBC Posts Field Trips, Meeting

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will offer two field trips and a meeting in March. The activities are free and open to the public.

On Saturday, March 7, at 4:30 p.m., John Lahr will lead a late afternoon and evening trip at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area for American woodcock and waterfowl. The main objective is to hear or view the courtship display of the American woodcock. Participants should register by 6 p.m. on Friday, March 6, by contacting Lahr at 717-205-3030 or johnlahr324@gmail.com.

Lahr will also lead a trip on Saturday, March 14, at 1 p.m. along the Susquehanna River starting at Wrightsville. Target birds are little gulls and black-headed gulls, as well as other river birds. Participants should register by 6 p.m. on Friday, March 13, by contacting Lahr.

The LCBC will meet on Thursday, March 12, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster. Jim Cubie will present "You Can Save 75 Birds Right in Your Own Yard."

People can save birds in their own yards by protecting them from deadly window collisions. The presentation will include several videos, a quiz challenging attendees to find birds in a special habitat, and a free "Consumer Guide to Bird Window Collision Prevention." Cubie will discuss strategies for preventing bird window collisions in the community and nationally.

Cubie is a retired attorney who has worked for conservation in many different venues. Since 2019, he has dedicated himself to the prevention of bird window collisions and the promotion of native plants. He works closely with bird window collision expert Daniel Klem of Muhlenberg College. He is married to Doreen Cubie, a widely published freelance writer specializing in wildlife conservation.
