Library events will highlight local history

Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will host its first History Author Faire from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22. The event will highlight several local authors whose works explore the rich history of Lancaster County, and it will also include Colonial-themed craft activities for kids and popular refreshments from early American times. The library requests that attendees register online in advance, but guests may drop in on the day of the faire as space allows. To register online, visit https://tinyurl.com/authorfaireqvl.

Participating authors will be available to meet guests and sign copies of their books during the Author Faire. Featured authors will include Kathy Brabson, Lynette Leaman Brenneman, Robert A. Frick, Nancy C. Groff, Donald Kautz, Carolyn Kleinman, J. Arthur Moore, Gregory J. Scott, Jerry D. Simotas, Benton Webber and Stanley T. White.

Frick, a local educator and historical tour guide, will be dressed in period-accurate Colonial garb to greet patrons as they arrive. Simotas will portray United States Marine Corps officer and antiwar activist Smedley Butler, a historical figure whom the author is currently researching for an upcoming book.

Some authors' books, such as Groff's "Watt & Shand: East, West, Hame's Best" and Kautz's "Mills of Lancaster County," highlight specific pieces of history that are unique to the Lancaster area. Other authors' works, including "The Real Boys of the Civil War" by Moore, focus on more general historical topics. Moore wrote "The Real Boys of the Civil War" after he accumulated roughly 20 years of research into historical accounts of young soldiers who fought in the Civil War. Moore began researching the topic while he was teaching history to middle-school students, as he wanted to make the lesson more relatable and engaging. "I started researching the stories of boys who fought in the war, collecting all of these materials in the process," Moore said. "This past year, I decided to put it together and publish it."

Although many of Moore's books explore history beyond the borders of Lancaster County, the retired teacher and author participates in the Solanco Historical Society's annual Living History Encampment. The event, which is held at the birthplace of Robert Fulton in Quarryville, includes several groups of Civil War re-enactors and tours of the historic grounds to offer guests a vivid glimpse of life during the war and its effect on American history.

In addition to the History Author Faire, Quarryville Library will host local educator and history buff Adam Zurn from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21. Zurn, who is the founder of Uncharted Lancaster, will give a presentation about the Native American petroglyphs discovered near the Susquehanna River.
