Library Plans Walking Scavenger Hunt Through Atglen

Atglen Public Library (APL) will present a Wandering Wizards' Quixotic Quest, a walking scavenger hunt through downtown Atglen, on Saturday, July 31, from 1 to 4 p.m.

As part of the first-time event, participants will be asked to report to Quest Headquarters across from Atglen Borough Hall on Main Street to pick up a clue sheet and a map. They will be asked to find 13 magical objects, solve the clues and fill in a fact sheet about Harry Potter, "The Boy Who Lived."

"July 31 is Harry Potter's birthday and J.K. Rowling's birthday," noted Robbyn Kehoe, APL library director.

The registration table for the scavenger hunt will be set up in front of the library's future location. Fees collected for the program will be used to purchase furnishings for the building.

"We're calling it a scavenger hunt, but it's more like a progressive escape room," said Kehoe. "You know you're at the right location, but you may not see (the object) right away. When you see (the object), it will have a clue to solve. There may be several answers, but when you look at the fact sheet you will know the right answer. It's a multi-step thing."

The scavenger hunt is a self-paced program; attendees may check in at any time. The hunt should take 60 to 90 minutes to complete.

At the end of the hunt, participants can return to Quest Headquarters for light refreshments in celebration of Harry's birthday.

"Some of the clues might take some time to work out. When you get to a clue, you can take a picture with your phone, collect the clues, go back to hunt headquarters, get refreshments and work out all the answers in the shade if it's a hot day," Kehoe pointed out.

Kehoe noted that Erin Metzler, a volunteer trustee with APL, is the mastermind behind the event, as well as the library's annual Di-Atglen Wizard Faire. This year's Faire will take place on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"She is an escape room fan and a Harry Potter fan," said Kehoe. "She is in charge of the escape room at the Wizard Faire, which always sells out. So, we decided to have (the scavenger hunt) to allow more people to experience that fun."

Kehoe added that families concerned about social distancing can feel safe at the upcoming scavenger hunt. "The clues are spread out so that families will not have to run into other people," she said.

There will be separate entrance fees for people age 12 and up and for children ages 6 to 11. Children under age 6 will be admitted for free. Children under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

It is recommended that participants register in advance so that enough water and snacks will be available. Payment can be made on the day of the event. To register, call the library at 610-593-6848 or email rkehoe@ccls.org.
