Lions Club car show and barbecue will support community organizations

A variety of vehicles, food, entertainment and more will highlight the 23rd annual Cruise In and chicken barbecue hosted by the Elizabethtown Lions Club. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rheems Fire Department, 350 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown. Registration for the car show will begin at 8 a.m.

"It is open to all vehicles - cars, trucks of all sizes, motorcycles, and tractors," said John Lerch, treasurer of the Elizabethtown Lions Club. "Antique and modern, stock and custom, even professional and commercial vehicles are also welcome, both in service and retired."

Several trophies will be awarded, including Best of Show, Participants' Choice, Best Truck, Best Motorcycle and Best Tractor, among others. "There will be a special award in memory of club member and retired Donegal High School band director Glen Leib," Lerch shared.

Along with vehicles, the event will feature food trucks, music from a DJ, vendors and fire trucks from the Rheems Fire Department. Chicken barbecue meals will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature a half-chicken from Peters' BBQ, a baked potato, a roll, applesauce and water. Although the deadline to purchase tickets is Wednesday, Sept. 4, a limited number of meals will be available for purchase on the day of the show. Tickets for the chicken barbecue may be purchased from any Elizabethtown Lions Club member or at Sloan's Norlanco Pharmacy, 428 Cloverleaf Road; B & G Lumber, 212 W. High St.; Donnie G. Boyer & Co., 112 S. Market St.; and Cocker's Towing, 355 Hershey Road.

Proceeds from the car show and barbecue benefit both the Rheems and Elizabethtown fire departments, as well as the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, the Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD) facility dog program and the Lions Club's monthly recognition of outstanding EASD students attending Lancaster County Career & Technology Center.

Lerch encourages everyone to come out to the car show, even if they are not entering a vehicle. "It's fun to stop by and see some great cars and meet some great people even if you don't have a vehicle you'd like to show yourself. It's very family friendly," he said. "It's a fun event for showing your vehicle or to stop by for an hour and just enjoy the vehicles being displayed and have lunch. There is no charge for spectators, but of course, donations are welcome."

The car show will be presented by Moats' Auto Repair and Stop-n-Go Oil Change, and it will be held rain or shine. To register for the car show, visit http://www.etownpalions.org. There is a discount for registering by Saturday, Sept. 7, but registration will also be accepted on the day of the event.
