Lions Club Pool Will Host Splash Party

The Millersville Lions Club Pool is inviting members of the community to come make a splash to raise some cash.

The pool, located at 314 N. Prince St., Millersville, will hold its third and final Splash Party of the summer from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13.

There will be baked goods, cotton candy, and snow cones for sale, and a DJ will provide music. The pool will close at 5 p.m. to set up for the Splash Party, and visitors must pay a nominal fee for admission. All proceeds from the event will be donated to autism awareness.

"We're hoping for a great weather day so we can get a lot of people here and raise as much money as possible," Millersville Lions Club president Bruce Ratliff said.

Ratliff noted that the pool holds three splash parties each year to benefit a charitable organization. The July Splash Party generated $3,000 for Make-A-Wish America, and the June event raised $4,000 for Breakthrough T1D, formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

"We try to rotate our charities, and someone in our club suggested autism awareness for the August event," said Ratliff. A representative from autism awareness will distribute handouts. "Our goal is just to make the community aware of what is going on and what's available in this community to meet those needs," said Ratliff. "We want to make the community aware of what's available to them."

Ratliff is hoping for a large crowd. "We want the most people to show up so that we're able to give the most (money) away," said Ratliff. "It's just an incredible way to serve the community from our perspective as the Lions Club, but it's also the community's opportunity to support these organizations in a very small way to them, but a big way to the community."

The splash parties are another way for the Lions Club to adhere to its mission. "One of the things that we're very proud of as Lions is number one, our motto is 'We Serve,'" Ratliff said. "We believe we're doing a couple of things at our splash parties. This a great facility. We have a snack bar that serves everything from candy bars and ice cream to pizza and hot dogs and all those kinds of things. But the pool facilities are really amazing. We were voted a couple of years ago as one of the best pools in Lancaster County, and we try and maintain our pool so that we offer the best that experience we can to the community. The other part of that is we want to support and make aware the offerings of these organizations to be able to help those in need, whether it be Type 1 diabetes or autism awareness, so that the community knows they're not alone and there are places to go to get help and to be able to meet the needs that they have in their their own homes, in their own families, in their community, whether it's it be Millersville, Lancaster, wherever it might be."

The Millersville Lions Club, which currently has 65 members, meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster. Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and run approximately one hour.

"We're always looking for new members," said Ratliff. "It takes a lot of volunteers to run events like the splash parties, and we have a huge bingo in the spring. We have a lot of opportunities to serve."
