Lions Club program provides benches

The Hershey Lions Club recently presented the Hershey Public Library with a bench as part of the club's plastic film recycling program. The Lions have been partnering with the library to collect plastics since January 2022. In addition to the bench at the library, the Lions Club has provided two benches to Derry Township Parks & Recreation as well as one bench each to Grace United Methodist Church and a local business, both of which have assisted in the collections.

In slightly over a year, the club has collected roughly 3,400 pounds of plastic bags and other plastic film, which was recycled into a composite material that is used for decking. A portion of the material was returned in the form of benches for use in the community. The project not only provides benches, but also results in less plastic destined for a landfill.

Receptacles where community members may drop off plastic bags and other plastic film are located in the lobby of the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Ave., Hershey, and at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 East Main St., Hummelstown.
