Lions plan Cruise In and chicken barbecue

"It's a fun event for showing your vehicle or to stop by for an hour and just enjoy the vehicles being displayed and have lunch," said John Lerch, treasurer of the Elizabethtown Lions Club, describing the 22nd annual Cruise In and chicken barbecue. "There is no charge for spectators, but of course, donations are welcome."

The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rheems Fire Department, 350 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown. Registration for the car show will begin at 8 a.m. Presented by Moats' Auto Repair, it will be held rain or shine, and the car show is open to all types of vehicles, including cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors. "Antique and modern, stock and custom, even professional and commercial vehicles are also welcome - both in service and retired," Lerch said. "There are several trophies to compete for, although this is a 'fun' show, not a formally judged show." Trophies will include Best of Show, Participant's Choice, Best Truck, Best Motorcycle, Best Tractor and several sponsored trophies. "There will be a special award in memory of club member and retired Donegal High School band director Glen Leib," Lerch noted.

Chicken barbecue meals will be available for pickup from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Featuring Peters' Barbecue, each meal will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, a roll, applesauce and water.

The festivities will also include music from a DJ, food trucks, vendors and fire trucks on display from Rheems Fire Department.

Proceeds from the event will benefit both the Rheems and Elizabethtown fire departments as well as various community organizations, including The Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown and the Elizabethtown Area School District facility dog program.

Tickets for the chicken barbecue may be purchased from any Elizabethtown Lions Club member or at Sloan's Norlanco Pharmacy, 428 Cloverleaf Road; B&G Lumber, 212 W. High St.; Donnie G. Boyer & Co., 112 S. Market St.; and Cocker's Towing, 355 Hershey Road. The deadline to purchase tickets is Wednesday, Sept. 6. A limited number of meals will be available for purchase on the day of the event, but preorders are encouraged.
