Litter Education Book Updated

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has announced that revisions to its "Open Your Eyes to Litter in a Watershed" book is complete. It is part of the Open Your Eyes to Litter series of five educational activity books, which the organization is updating in partnership with illustrator and concept artist Brady Mock and the Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation (EPCAMR). The updates are being made to account for the changing environment, new environmental education standards, and new types of litter. The original series was created more than 20 years ago, and more than one million copies were distributed to schools throughout Pennsylvania.

"Open Your Eyes to Litter in a Watershed" is designed for kids in grades two through four. The book focuses on how illegal dumping and littering affect watersheds. The book includes vocabulary, activities, journal prompts, and activities that reinforce the concept of a watershed and how litter impacts the people and animals who live there.

Pennsylvania's first-ever Litter Action Plan, announced by the Governor's Office in 2021, called for education and outreach strategies to ensure that all Pennsylvanians know littering is unacceptable and that there are better ways to manage their waste. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful's Open Your Eyes to Litter book series aligns with these aims.

The Open Your Eyes to Litter series provide hands-on learning and is appropriate for children in kindergarten through grade six; each book is tailored to specific grades within this range. Each book revision addresses Pennsylvania Department of Education academic standards and has an accompanying teacher's guide that provides multi-disciplined educational activities that expand on the information, ideas, and activities that are included in each book.
