LSHS slates fall play

Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS), 1600 Book Road, Lancaster, will present its fall play at 7 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 7 to 9, in the school's performing arts center. Tickets will be available to purchase at the door or online in advance, and students and seniors will receive a discounted rate.

This year's show, "Rumors," is a farcical play written by Neil Simon that involves a small cast of 10 characters. This is the second of Simon's plays that the school's theater department has performed; in 2021, LSHS students offered two renditions of Simon's comedy "The Odd Couple." Susan Rettew, the theater director at LSHS, said that Simon's plays offer challenging yet fun shows for her students. "I'm a big fan of (Neil Simon)," Rettew added. "The dialogue is quick and witty, and students have to have excellent chemistry." Due to the small size of the cast and fast-paced dialogue, students have been rehearsing nearly every day to learn the script and foster friendships both on and off stage.

"Rumors" takes place at a dinner party held in honor of Charley Brock, the deputy mayor of New York City. The evening gradually unfolds into chaos after a comical series of mishaps, interpersonal bickering, an absent kitchen staff and more than one accidental gunshot.

Amara Russell, who will play the character Claire Ganz, said the show has been a new experience for her, as she has previously acted in larger-scale productions. "Having such a small cast has its pros and cons, but seeing each other every day has helped us build chemistry," Russell added. "We've all really enjoyed getting to know one another as people as well as how we're playing the characters."

For cast members such as Clara Mecouch, who will play the character Chris Gorman, rehearsing for "Rumors" has served as an opportunity to don a persona entirely opposite of her own. "Chris is a smoker, and she has a whole thing where she gets really drunk," Mecouch said. "It's really fun getting to flop around on the couch, and it's fun making everyone laugh."

Senior Gabe Bostdorf, who will play Chris' husband, Ken, said the play has brought friendships between cast members to life. "There are dynamics between these characters and couples with more personal matters," Bostdorf added. "Even banter between friends resonates more as we've gotten to know other cast members."

James Appelgrijn, who will play Leny Ganz, said Simon's plays are unique in the way they demand natural chemistry and fluid dialogue from the cast. "It's not like musicals that feature outlandish characters you can watch in a movie," said Appelgrijn. "You have to figure out the quickness of the lines, how to say them with the right emphasis and how to move across the stage naturally instead of standing in one place."
