MAHS presentation to focus on geology

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to a slideshow on "Your Backyard Geology" during its 9 a.m. meeting on Saturday, Sept. 9, in Millersville's Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The speaker will be geologist and author Jeri Jones, whose area of interest includes the geology of southeastern Pennsylvania. He also owns Jones Geological Services in Spring Grove.

Among the questions Jones will explore in his presentation are "What types of rocks and minerals are found in the Millersville area, and were any of them used as mineral resources?" and "How were they formed, and what was the landscape like millions of years ago?" Jones will also expose any geologic hazards that might be found locally. A question-and-answer period will conclude the program.

For 44 years, Jones has been busy with geology-related activities. In addition to overseeing his business, he serves as a consultant to several area quarries and dirt tracks, travels around the country leading field trips for people of all ages and co-hosts the online program "Zoom Rock Room."

He previously taught at Messiah University, York College of Pennsylvania and the Gettysburg campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, where his work earned him a Digman Award for Geologic Excellence from the Eastern Chapter of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers. Additionally, the Catawba College geoarchaeology graduate has authored five books, including "Geologic Guide of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail."

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. For more details, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before noon or at pge8507@aol.com.
