Maker Fest will spotlight creativity

Head to the Milanof-Schock Library on Saturday, June 24, and you'll get a firsthand look at creativity in action. The seventh annual Maker Fest will be held at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Makers will be set up out outside and inside the library.

"We have a quite a selection of makers this year," said Kim Beach, operations coordinator for the library. "We have Vision Key 3D, who will be running a 3D printer. We have a tattoo artist who will be demoing their work. One of the high school teachers will be throwing pottery." Someone will be displaying woodworking, and another person will showcase watercolors.

"We have a magician coming who will show kids how to do tricks and then have a craft for them to do," Beach said. Library staff members will have a booth demonstrating a Cricut machine and will create an item for people to take home.

Even the food at Maker Fest will be creative. Ella's Sweet Bites will be preparing made-to-order mini pancakes available for purchase.

New this year, the participants will have the opportunity to sell their items, Beach noted. "We had a lot of people who asked in the past if they could buy something, so we decided to let our makers sell if they want to," she explained. "They are focused on people learning and seeing how things are done, because we still want there to be an educational component to the day, but people can also purchase items."

Live music will be featured at Maker Fest, provided by a classical guitar duo. "People are welcome to sit and listen to some music and just relax," Beach said. The musicians will perform outside, weather permitting.

Maker Fest is all about showing the community what local makers do, why they do it and how they do it, Beach said, adding, "We want people to come out, talk to the makers and ask questions."
