Meet A Continental Army Captain

Historical Presentation Scheduled

During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Army, led by Gen. George Washington, camped at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777 to 1778. William Colfax, a young officer from Connecticut, and Gen. Frederick von Steuben, a foreigner nicknamed "Baron," both reported to Washington during this time.

On Friday, Aug. 12, historical re-enactor Craig Hall will portray Colfax in a presentation that will explain how these two men were instrumental in making changes in the Continental Army that eventually led to victory. The event will be held at the Lititz Historical Foundation Museum, 145 E. Main St., Lititz, from 7 to 8 p.m.

Hall will be joined by Sheryl Williams, who will represent Hester Schuyler, the wife of Capt. Colfax. The program will include the specific importance of the Valley Forge encampment and details of the birth of the U.S. Army and the soldiers who fought the war that transformed this land from colonies to an independent nation.

There is no cost to attend, and the foundation encourages interested individuals to bring friends and neighbors. Guided tours of the 1792 Johannes Mueller House, located adjacent to the museum, will be held during the evening for a fee.
