Meeting to focus on Lee's invasions of North

The Harrisburg Civil War Round Table will meet on Friday, March 17, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Central Penn College Conference Center, 600 Valley Road, Summerdale. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and a buffet dinner of pork loin, salmon, rice pilaf, carrots, soup, salad and cookies will be served at 6:45 p.m. Anyone who plans to attend the lecture only should arrive by 7:30 p.m. The lecture will also be broadcast via Zoom.

Freelance historian Bradley M. Gottfried will discuss the subject of his latest book, "Lee Invades the North: A Comparison of the Antietam and Gettysburg Campaigns." Gottfried will compare the two invasions, which began promisingly for the Army of Northern Virginia while causing great consternation north of the Potomac. His presentation will cover the political climate, war effort, armies, leadership, military intelligence, routes to the battlefield, preliminary encounters, battlefield terrain, battles, and post-campaign events.

Gottfried has written 17 books and numerous magazine articles pertaining to the Civil War. In addition to his campaign map books, he has also written on Gettysburg, the Point Lookout Prisoner of War Camp and the Hope Antietam paintings. He is an Antietam Certified Battlefield Guide and a Gettysburg Licensed Town Guide.

The lecture is free. There is a fee for the dinner, payable at the door; however, anyone wishing to attend the dinner should make reservations by Sunday, March 12, by contacting Brian Foster at hcwrt.membership@gmail.com or 717-962-6122.
