Middle school honors veterans

Middletown Area Middle School (MAMS) marked Veterans Day with the annual Veterans Day breakfast and program. This was the 27th year for the program, which was attended by staff members, students, and local veterans. Each year, many of the veterans attend with their grandchildren who are MAMS students.

Middletown native and Pennsylvania Army National Guard 1st Sgt. Jessica M. Raven was the event's featured speaker and shared with students her journey from Middletown to deployments all over the world. While a student in Middletown Area School District, Raven was part of the WMSS radio program; she said that that experience helped her gain clear and concise communication skills, which have served her well. She encouraged students to better themselves each day and celebrate the successes and accomplishments of their peers.

The event featured a medley of patriotic music from the MAMS band and essay readings from sixth-grader Zachary Ponnett, seventh-grader Jacquelyn Mick, and eighth-grader Marissa McDaid, who are all finalists in the Veterans of Foreign Wars' Patriot's Pen youth essay contest. Veterans from all branches of the U.S. armed forces were also recognized.

The event concluded with the laying of a memorial wreath by MAMS Student Council officers and eighth-graders Chloe Adams and Kannon Orris. Taps was played by eighth-grader Leah Snyder.

The event was sponsored by American Legion Post 594, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1620, Moose Lodge Post 410, Lower Swatara Lions Club, and Middletown Anglers and Hunters.
