More Eggs, More Fun at the YMCA

It promises to be an egg-citing egg-stravaganza.

The Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA will host its annual Splish, Splash, Easter Egg Bash on Sunday, March 15, from 12:30 to 3:15 p.m. in the indoor pool, which is located at 800 Village Road, Lancaster.

Registration is required and can be done as late as the day of the activity. Go to http://www.rosesymca.org/programs to register or for additional information.

Everybody is welcome. Nonmembers must pay a nominal fee; there is no charge for members.

"This runs a lot like any other Easter egg hunts," said event organizer Cora Minder. "We have children come in by age at different times, and we throw hundreds of (plastic) eggs in the pool. The whole surface of the water is eggs. For the older children, we have eggs that sink, so they have to go looking for them. The kids bring in their own baskets, and they gather as many eggs as they can. Really, it's about the fun of doing it."

There will be one golden egg in every group, and the child who finds the golden egg will win a session of swim lessons for free.

"It's really the fun of gathering the eggs and seeing how many they can get in their basket, and then they dump them into a big bin, and then they go get some more," said Minder. "They have 15 minutes for each group to do this. It is just a delight. It's so much fun just to watch."

Kids between the ages of 6 months and 2 years old will hunt for eggs from 12:30 to 12:45 p.m., followed by ages 3 to 5 from 1 to 1:15 p.m. and 1:30 to 1:45 p.m., ages 6 to 8 from 2 to 2:15 p.m. and 2:30 to 2:45 p.m., and ages 9 to 13 from 3 to 3:15 p.m.

Children age 5 and under, non-swimmers, and those under four feet tall must have a parent accompany them in the water. Each kid should bring a plastic basket to hold their eggs. Participants will also receive coloring pages following the hunt.

"We will have inflatable Easter bunnies to put in the pool, and the kids love the inflatable toys," said Corinne Tolan, who is the L-S YMCA's aquatics director. "This is the event that I've been involved in the longest since I started working here, and I think it's one of the more joyful ones that we have. Every age group just seems to love hunting for the eggs, from the babies to the older kids. I'm really grateful to see how it's still magical for the older age groups."

There will be more opportunities to locate Easter eggs. "We will have double the number of eggs for the event this year, because I found a huge bin on Facebook Marketplace," said Tolan. "More eggs, more fun."

Families will be able to stay after the Splish, Splash, Easter Egg Bash. "This is attached to a family swim," said Minder. "On the other side of the pool, parents can stay and swim with their kids and play for the entire afternoon if they want to. It's just so much fun. Everybody has fun. The parents are laughing. The children are having fun. The grandparents are having a blast watching and being part of it. 'Joyful' is a really good explanation for it."

Preschoolers will have to wear personal flotation devices. "We help them with that," said Tolan. "Some of our instructors and some of our lifeguards will come in and help, so they'll be in the water to corral the eggs and help out the kids."

The learning experience is a bonus. "I think the other reason that this event is important is because it highlights the importance of safety around water," Tolan said. "It introduces children and their families to the water in a safe environment. The lifeguards and the people that are helping to volunteer with the event will help fit people for life jackets, and we talk about life jacket safety a little bit too. There's that more serious element too, even though this is definitely more of a fun event."
