Mountville Lions Will Hold Potpie Sale

It's a tasty tradition.

The Mountville Lions Club will hold its biannual chicken potpie sale starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville.

It is a takeout-only meal sold by the quart; the Lions Club will provide containers.

Desserts made by club members will also be for sale, including peanut butter candy cake, strawberry shortcake, and a variety of other treats.

Brooms constructed by local Amish craftspeople will be sold.

Volunteers start preparing the potpie at 3 a.m. on the day of the event and use approximately 460 pounds of chicken, 240 pounds of potatoes, 200 pounds of flour, and 60 dozen eggs.

Lion Eric Weaver strongly encourages visitors to arrive early. A line forms prior to the 10 a.m. start time, and the event will end when the meals are sold out, which often occurs early in the afternoon.

"Come support the community," Weaver said. "Everything we make goes right back to the community. We have been making potpie for 50 years, and we're getting pretty good at it."

The Mountville Lions Club holds potpie meals on the third Saturdays of March and October. Weaver said the potpie suppers are one of the group's main fundraisers, along with having Roller Ball stands at the Mountville Fire Company Carnival and the Washington Boro Tomato Festival.

He noted that the proceeds are used to help support projects, including funding scholarships at Hempfield High School; supporting Beacon Lodge, a nonprofit camp in Union County that offers programs for those who are blind or challenged physically in other ways; maintaining the pavilion at the borough park; and focusing on other projects that help people with vision impairment. The organization also supports the Columbia Food Bank and organizes an annual Easter Egg Roll, which will be held at the Borough Park on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m.

The Mountville Lions Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. Anyone interested in joining the club is welcome to attend. Call Weaver at 717-368-2810 so that the club will have a meal available.
