Murder and mystery abound in "Little Shop of Horrors"

If you come to see "Little Shop of Horrors" at Eastern York High School, be prepared to laugh while also taking home an important lesson.

"I think the message of this show is that you don't need to change yourself for people to like you," said Lillian Cichocki, a senior who plays Seymour in the show. "Sometimes, what you were looking for was right in front of you the entire time, and if you waste too much time trying to fix the world around you, you become blind to what you could have had all along and miss your chance. Even if life is hard, the best thing you can do is keep being yourself no matter what."

The Eastern York Broadway Knights will present "Little Shop of Horrors" at 7 p.m. from Thursday, April 4, through Saturday, April 6, with an additional performance at 2:30 p.m. on April 6.

Set in rundown place called Skid Row, the musical follows an awkward botanist, Seymour Krelborn, as he handles unrequited love for his co-worker, Audrey, while also tending to a very unusual plant. "When a strange, sassy plant shows up and turns his life around, it tests Seymour's limits of what he is really willing to do for love in a riveting story of murder and mystery," Lillian shared.

Eastern York's production will feature a cast, crew and pit orchestra of about 70 students.

Junior Caris Rolph, who plays Audrey, said rehearsing the show has been fun but also challenging, as the cast learned to work around an ever-growing plant, operated by puppeteers. Caris also noted that audiences can expect to see good chemistry on stage, adding, "We all work really well together, which makes bringing these characters to life fun."

For Corbett Hilt, a senior who portrays flower-shop owner Mr. Mushnik, the show has provided an opportunity to have fun on stage while putting together an entertaining finished product.

"This production is full of little jokes and puts a little funny twist on a horror-themed atmosphere," Corbett said. "Viewers can definitely expect lots of laughs and plot curveballs."
