National Night Out To Be Observed In Christiana

The Christiana Police Department will take part in the nationwide National Night Out program on Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. Activities will take place in front of the borough hall, 10 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana.

Accoring to http://www.natw.org, National Night Out started in 1984, when residents were asked to turn on their porch lights and to keep a vigil on the front porch to promote crime prevention and community unity. Today, the event, which is held on the first Tuesday in August, is designed to build relationships between neighbors and law enforcement and promote a sense of community.

In Christiana, there will be a police officer on hand to talk to youngsters and hand out coloring books. The Chester County Sheriff's Department and its K-9 Unit is also scheduled to attend. The Christiana Fire Company will present activities, and a representative from Amtrak will discuss train track safety.

Those who visit the event will be entered into a random drawing to win Lancaster Barnstormers tickets and ice cream cones at Dutch-Way Farm Market.

Refreshments will include freshly made popcorn and freeze pops.
