Nature Programs Planned

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Additionally, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. Buzzard Buffet, for people age 5 and up, will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30. The first part of the program will be about birds of prey, with a hands-on look at specimens from the park's collection. The last part of the program will include building a vulture meal from a buffet of real treats. A liability waiver must be signed at the program to eat the buffet items.

Skull and Skeleton Surprises will be offered to people of all ages from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31, and again from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 1. Participants will examine skulls and skeletal remains of wild animals to identify characteristics of the animal. Tips will be provided for cleaning and identifying skulls people may find, and participants may bring these items, if desired.

Homeschool Wednesday: Coral Reefs will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3, for students ages 8 to 12. A naturalist will explore the reasons for the concern about coral reefs today as well as the diversity of life inhabiting this ecosystem. Students will research and present about an animal to their peers as part of this class. Participants should wear old clothes and plan for indoor and outdoor activity. Children under age 8 may accompany older siblings but must be registered.

Jump Into STEM - Nature Scavenger Hunt, for children ages 3 to 5, has been set for Thursday, Nov. 4, from 10 to 11 a.m. Preschoolers will work on identifying shapes, colors, and other characteristics of objects in the natural setting around them.

Thursday in the Park: Birds of Winter, for children ages 6 to 9, will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Nov. 4. After learning about some common winter birds and playing a round of bird bingo, attendees will go outdoors to search for birds. Attendees should dress for the weather. Children under age 6 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.
