Orchestra posts "Freedom & Fate" concert

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will present the fifth and final concert in the 2022-23 season's Masterworks series. The concert, "Freedom & Fate," will be conducted by music director Michael Butterman and will feature composer and double bassist Xavier Foley and violinist Audrey Wright. Performances will occur on Friday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 13, at 2 and 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster. A free pre-concert lecture will begin 1 hour before each of the three performances.

The LSO will present Foley's original work "For Justice and Peace," which recognizes the struggle for freedom and equity among enslaved people and all African Americans. This double concerto was composed by Foley to mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the slave ship White Lion in Jamestown, Va. "For Justice and Peace" was premiered by the Sphinx Organization at Carnegie Hall in October 2019 and co-commissioned by the two organizations.

Foley and Wright will also perform the virtuosic "Gran Duo Concertante" by Giovanni Bottesini. In the concert's second half, the LSO will perform Simon's "Fate Now Conquers" and Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

Foley is a first-prize winner of the 2016 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the winner of the 2014 Sphinx Competition, and a 2018 recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant. He has performed recitals and chamber music at various venues and festivals. Foley's bass concerto "Soul Bass," commissioned by the Atlanta Symphony, was premiered by that orchestra last March.

Violinist Audrey Wright is a musician in the solo, chamber music, and orchestral realms. She joined the New York Philharmonic in 2022 and has been the concertmaster of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra since 2018. She previously served as associate concertmaster of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Wright has performed around the globe.
