Pack 37 to hold annual flea market

Cub Scout Pack 37 will continue its annual tradition of hosting the Memorial Day Flea Market on Monday, May 29 at 7 a.m. The event will be held at the Hempfield Fire Department, located at 19 W. Main St., Landisville.

Prior to the event, members of Pack 37 will prepare the field beside the firehouse to allow vendors to set up their tables. Each space in the field is available to be rented by members of the public who wish to sell items or promote their businesses. A section of the field will be reserved for parking, and yard sales will also be held nearby along Main Street in Landisville. "If people want to, they can park their cars in our lot and then explore all of Landisville," said Clint Schlosser, committee chair of Pack 37. "This way they don't have to worry about traffic as they look through all of the vendors in town."

The Scouts in Pack 37 will maintain restrooms for the event and will operate a concession stand to sell items such as hot dogs, hamburgers, egg sandwiches and pierogies. The funds raised from the concession stand and vendor space rentals will support a trip that members of Pack 37 take to a new location each year. Last year, the Scouts visited Battleship New Jersey Museum & Memorial for an overnight stay. This year's trip is currently being planned. Aside from raising funds for its annual trip, Pack 37's goal for hosting the Memorial Day Flea Market is to teach its members about community service and helping the community.

In addition to an annual escapade, Pack 37 offers a variety of other events throughout the year, including camping trips, hikes, bike rides and rocket launches. Pack 37 also runs the districtwide Pinewood Derby event annually. Once a week, members of the group meet for an educational activity or arts and crafts session.

During weekly meetings, older Scouts who have passed through the ranks of Pack 37 often return to mentor the Cub Scouts. This gives the younger kids an opportunity to see what they are working toward and to learn from a more experienced Scout. The older kids teach the Cub Scouts about topics such as knife safety and basic camping techniques. Schlosser said his son, who is now a member of Scouts BSA Troop 267, started as a member of Pack 37 and returns regularly to assist the den leader. "He's acquired confidence and the ability to be a good citizen from being a Scout," Schlosser said. "It's cool to watch. As a parent, you can see the program give kids the tools to live their lives on their own."

Pack 37 will accept vendor space reservations until Sunday, May 28. To reserve a space, visit http://www.pack37.com.
