Parkesburg Free Library to offer Summer Reading Program

The Parkesburg Free Library, 105 West St., will present its annual Summer Reading Program, themed "Adventure Begins at Your Library." The schedule includes reading incentive activities and special events.

Children of all ages are invited to register for the Summer Reading Program, which opened on June 10 and will run through Friday, Aug. 16. Children should pick up a reading packet and reading log at the library's circulation desk in order to participate.

Children are asked to read every day for 30 minutes or have books read to them. Each 30 minutes is worth one bead of their choice, which they can use to put on a cable to create a bracelet or a backpack hanger.

When the cables are full of beads, children may receive another cable. The cables can be joined together to make a necklace.

The Summer Reading Program also features a patch power activity. Children may select the patch card that they want to earn and complete any three activities listed on the card.

For example, to earn a Crafty Creator patch, students may read a book about a famous artist or crafter; visit an art exhibit, museum or craft fair in person or online; or create a work of art using recycled items. For a Caped Avenger patch, youngsters may read a biography about a real-life hero, create their own comic strip, draw a picture of their favorite superhero or use old comic books to create a collage.

Those who complete their cards should bring them to the library and they will receive a patch. The patches can also fit on the beaded items.

Completing a patch card earns children both a patch and a bead. Each time a youngster brings in a reading log to be stamped or a completed patch card, he or she will receive a free ticket for a monthly prize drawing.

The Summer Reading Program will also feature Wednesday talks presented by Chester County Park Rangers. All ranger-led programs will begin at 1 p.m.

The talk on July 3 will be Fish and Fishing. Attendees will learn about fish found in Pennsylvania and then use rods and plastic fish to practice casting and other fishing basics. A program on disc golf will be presented on July 17, and the program on Aug. 7 will feature a stream study.

The library is offering tai chi classes this summer on Thursdays, June 27, July 11 and July 25, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. A fee will be charged, and drop-ins are welcome.

Registration for the ranger programs and tai chi is required by stopping at the circulation desk, calling the library at 610-857-5165 or sending the library a Facebook message.

Parkesburg Free Library will host a five-week Girl Scout Introduction Troop for Daisies and Brownies on Fridays, July 12 through Aug. 9, from 10 to 11 a.m. Girls entering kindergarten through grade three are invited to attend the program, which is being presented by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP). The program will feature games and crafts, and attendees will also learn about the fundamentals of Girl Scouting and earn patches. The program is free, but registration is required at http://www.gsep.org.

Ongoing programs at the library include preschool story time, which is held every Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Children's Room; Mystery Book Club, which meets on the third Thursday of the month from 6 to 7 p.m.; and the Knitting and Crochet Club, which meets every Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

The library also has a community garden and offers free produce on its sharing table.
