Parks Department Sets Schedule

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Thursday in the Park: Mammals in Winter, for children ages 6 to 9, will take place on Thursday, Jan. 7, from 1 to 2 p.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Participants will learn about local mammals and strategies they use to survive winter, and they will search for evidence of the mammals' activities. Children under age 6 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.

During Family Games on Friday, Jan. 8, from 11 a.m. to noon, families are invited to participate in tag games that simulate animals and their behaviors in the wild. Skulls and furs of the animals represented in the games will also be on hand.

Let's Go Tracking, for people of all ages, will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, and Tuesday, Jan. 19. Participants will learn about animals from the signs they leave behind.

Wolf Cub: Paws on the Path, for Wolf Cub Scouts age 8 and up, has been set for Jan. 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. Participants will earn their Paws on the Path belt loop by completing all requirements during the program, including a 1-mile hike. Cub Scouts should review the requirements and be prepared to discuss the first through fourth requirements. They should also bring Cub Scout Six Essentials.

Are You Ready for Some Sugaring? will be offered from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 10, at Central Park Pavilion 11, 733 Williamson Road, Lancaster. People age 15 and up will learn about trees, collection, boiling techniques, how to know when sap is syrup, and what to do with the syrup.

Munchkin Science: Animal Signs, geared toward children ages 3 to 5 with siblings welcome, has been set for Tuesday, Jan. 12, from 10 to 11 a.m. Children will be led on a hike to find signs left behind by animals. They will learn about tracking and make a tracking booklet to take home.

Tweens and Teens: Dry Ice Action, for youths age 11 and up, will be offered from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14, at Central Park Pavilion 22, 1101 Kiwanis Drive, Lancaster. After learning some basics, participants will predict what will happen when dry ice is tested in a variety of conditions. Adults must sign release forms as they drop off students for the program.
