Piano trio sets performance

The Mendelssohn Piano Trio will perform at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, in the sanctuary at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey.

The trio consists of Ya-Ting Chang, a pianist from Taiwan; Peter Sirotin, a violinist from Ukraine; and Fiona Thompson, a cellist from England. Chang will play Derry Church's 9-foot 2019 Model D Steinway concert grand piano.

The inspiration for the concert was a quote by Felix Mendelssohn: "The essence of the beautiful is unity in variety." The Mendelssohn Piano Trio will present Tyzen Hsiao's "Formosa" Trio, a tribute to natural beauty of Taiwan; Beethoven's Piano Trio Op. 70, No. 2; and Mendelssohn's Piano Trio in D Minor. The program is intended to showcase the expressive range and historical development of the piano trio.

Since its founding in 1997, the Mendelssohn Piano Trio has performed more than 500 concerts in the U.S., Europe and Asia. The group has also recorded 15 CDs, its most recent being a cycle of all of Haydn's piano trios. The Mendelssohn Piano Trio's repertoire of over 100 works embraces music from all periods of the genre's history. The group's performances and recordings can be heard on many classical radio programs, including NPR's "Performance Today," as well as WETA's "Front Row Washington."

The concert is part of the church's 2023 Arts Alive! cultural series. A freewill offering will be received. Handicapped-accessible parking and an elevator are available.
