Playing From the Heart

Spend just five minutes with Sandy Heisey, and it's impossible not to smile. Sit her down at a piano, and the room comes alive as melodies flow, feet tap and laughter fills the air. Twice a week, residents of Juniper Village get front-row seats to Heisey's joyful performances when the Mount Joy musician stops by to share her infectious spirit with everyone in the room.

"I love to play and sing," said Heisey, who is 72. "When I was much younger, I played in piano bars, but now that I'm older, I love to play for folks my age. I'll play anything they want to hear. I love patriotic songs to oldies but goodies, big band, Broadway. I love to take requests."

Heisey began playing professionally in 1983. Over the years, she's been in several bands, and she has performed in countless venues. But these days, Tuesday and Thursday evenings are the highlight of her week.

"I love interacting with the people who live at Juniper," she said. "I love to watch them smile and sing along with me. I always say, 'Please sing along!' I love when everyone joins in."

Heisey also performs at other senior living communities but notes that Juniper Village is a favorite - and the closest to her home.

She's been entertaining residents at Juniper for the past two years, after connections director Katie Erb invited her in.

"Sandy is one of those people who lights up the room when she enters," Erb said. "It's like she goes around throwing confetti and sparkles in the air wherever she goes. She lifts the spirits of everyone around her. The residents love Sandy and have nothing but wonderful things to say about her music."

The evenings Heisey performs have become a highlight of the week at Juniper Village.

"We have five evenings a week of musical entertainment after dinner," Erb shared, "and folks tell me it feels like they're on a cruise ship, and they are loving it!"

Resident Bob Conley beams when asked about Sandy. "I like everything about her," he said. "She's a wonderful singer, a wonderful piano player, and she loves my jokes! She plays all kinds of music: religious, hillbilly, popular songs, old music from 50 years ago, Broadway. She plays it all!"

Another resident, Jetty Sadler, agreed, adding, "Sandy uses so much expression and so much joy in her music! You can just see how much she enjoys it herself, and we enjoy her so much. Her singing and her piano are just fabulous."

Heisey's visits are about much more than the music. Her performances stir memories, laughter and a sense of connection that lingers long after the last note fades. With her easy smile and boundless energy, she's become part of the fabric of Juniper Village, a familiar face who brightens the week for residents and staff alike.

She dresses for the occasion, often coordinating her outfits with the season or an upcoming holiday, and she plays every tune from memory, her fingers moving effortlessly across the keys.

"When Sandy's here, she doesn't just perform. She engages," Erb said. "You feel like you're in the moment, truly living life. It's almost a spiritual experience."

As her music drifts through the halls and voices join in from every corner, it's clear that Heisey offers more than entertainment. She brings connection, joy and a gentle reminder of how powerful a simple song can be.
