Preschool to celebrate 50th anniversary

The Lancaster Brethren Preschool will conclude its 50th anniversary year with a celebration on Sunday, May 7, at the Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave. The church has invited current and former leaders, teachers, students and their families to participate.

The celebration will begin with a special Youth Sunday worship service at 10:15 a.m. in the Family Life Center. Middle school and high school youths will lead worship in a child-friendly service featuring children's songs, a meditation by lead pastor Misty Wintsch and a time of celebrating 50 years of preschool ministry to the community.

Current preschool director Jessica Steinman and board chair Kathy Focht will honor founding director Lynne Shively, while also recognizing former teachers, board members and families. The service will be livestreamed on the church's YouTube channel.

The service will end with the congregation singing "This Little Light of Mine" as preschool children light the way with glow sticks to an open house of the preschool facilities. A free finger food lunch also will be served.

Memories will be shared through a slideshow of historical photos before the service and during the mealtime, and additional photos will be on display during the open house.

Founded in fall 1972, the preschool offers classes from September to mid-May for children ages 2 to 5, two or three days a week. The church donates facilities and provides board leadership. Steinman is in her 15th year as director of the program.
