Presentation to focus on architect

St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 700 Pleasure Road, Lancaster, will host a presentation on Monday, Sept. 9, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Gregory J. Scott, co-founder of RLPS Architects in Lancaster, will discuss the making of his first book, profiling Lancaster's most prolific architect. The more-than-200-page, hard-bound book, "Urban Legend: The Life and Legacy of C. Emlen Urban," is a never-before-told story of Urban and 25 of the architectural masterpieces that continue to define the city of Lancaster.

Urban launched his architectural career 140 years ago, shaping nearly every significant structure in Lancaster city from 1885 to 1935. With only a high school education, Urban eventually completed more than 645 commissions across six states and earned the distinction of being personally referred to as "my architect" by Milton S. Hershey.

With photos and stories about the people behind Urban's commissions, "Urban Legend" offers a look at the man who transitioned Lancaster city from the era of 18th-century Colonial architecture to the era of worldly sophistication, including Beaux Arts, Italian Renaissance and French Baroque.

"Urban Legend" was created as a collaborative endeavor and produced entirely by Lancaster-based talent.

Scott is also the author of the "Design Intervention" column. He is also the two-time recipient of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County's Journalist and Education Award.

The program is free and open to the public as part of St. Matthew's Conversation Around the Corner speaker series. The aim of the series is to unite the community by exploring diverse subjects and fostering learning and connection.
