Presentation To Focus On Huguenots

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host Bonnie Watkins as the guest speaker at its monthly meeting, to be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 21, at the historical society building, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy.

Watkins, of the Huguenot Society of Pennsylvania, organized in 1918, will present the history of the Huguenots, descendants of French Protestants who were followers of John Calvin in France in the early 1500s. Due to religious persecution, many Huguenots were forced to flee France to other countries in the 16th to 18th centuries.

This meeting will be held in person, outside, on the grounds of the historical society. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. For those who have been vaccinated, face masks are not required, but are encouraged. Those who have not been vaccinated are asked to wear a mask. This presentation will not be delivered online.

The monthly historical society meetings include a brief business meeting, followed by guest speakers from throughout the county presenting on a variety of historical topics. These meetings are open to the public, without charge.

As of June 6, the historical society building is again open to the public every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Community members may stop by to do research and see the displays of Mount Joy memorabilia. More information is available at http://www.mountjoyhistory.com.
