Program to examine feathers

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

Retired science educator and environmentalist Kathy Gingerich will present "Birds of a Feather - Feather ID." She will share how a feather's characteristics reveal its purpose, where it is located on the bird's body and how the feather's color is produced. Additional topics will be how feathers grow, how long they last, how and when they are replaced, and how they are kept in their streamlined position.

Gingerich taught Earth science and astronomy for 28 years, mostly at Red Land High School in York County. She ran the West Shore School District's Environmental Center at Gifford Pinchot State Park for 10 years. She was recognized for having the top environmental program in Pennsylvania. Now in her retirement, Gingerich continues to volunteer, leading nature walks for school groups at Pinchot State Park. As a member of the Garden Club of York, she is the chair of the Birds, Bees and Butterflies Committee. She is a past recipient of grants from the Audubon Society and National Geographic Society, was a National Secondary Teacher of the Year award winner, and was a teacher consultant for many years.

A short business meeting will precede the program. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717 or visit http://www.lancasterbirdclub.org or http://www.facebook.com/lancasterbirdclub.
