Program to examine macular degeneration

VisionCorps will offer an online seminar about age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) on Monday, Sept. 16, from 1 to 2:15 p.m. as part of its speaker series. The event is free and open to the public.

Macular degeneration is a retinal disease that is the leading cause of vision loss for people over 65 in the U.S. It can cause damage to central vision and could result in permanently impaired vision. The presentation will focus on age-related macular degeneration and what to expect in different stages of the disease.

Dr. Dina Gewaily from Lancaster Retina Specialists will be the presenter. She is returning for a second presentation on ARMD, having presented earlier this year about the disease and its treatment.

Gewaily is an experienced retinal surgeon who previously practiced in Philadelphia. She is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was chosen as the first female surgical retina fellow. She was a member of the surgical retina team that developed the first FDA-approved gene therapy in the U.S. for an inherited disease.
