Program to explore flintknapping

The Circle Legacy Center (CLC) will hold a Second Friday program on April 11 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. Attendees are asked to use the Concord Street entrance.

Robert Kapp will present a lecture titled "An Introduction to Flintknapping." Used by Native Americans, flintknapping is the art of making stone tools. Kapp will give an overview of the basic techniques, the history of flintknapping, and the resources employed. He will display reproductions, as well as original arrowheads and other stone tools that were found in Lancaster and York counties.

Kapp has been a flintknapper for 33 years and an artifact collector for 49 years. He is a member of the Susquehanna Valley Flintknappers and Pennsylvania Flintknapping and Stone Tool Guild. He was a founding board member of both the Pennsylvania Flintknapping and Stone Tool Guild and Chapter 28 of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, where he held the positions of vice president and secretary for his chapter.

Attendees are asked to bring a food item to share if they are able; they should also bring their own place settings.
