Program to Explore History of Company

The Elizabethtown Historical Society will host a presentation, "The Story of Elizabethtown's Shank's Extracts," on Tuesday, June 16, at 7 p.m. The event will take place at the society's headquarters, located at 57 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown.

While many Lancaster County residents may recognize Shank's Extracts by its iconic yellow label and Pennsylvania Dutch-style border, they may not realize that this globally recognized brand originated in Elizabethtown. Guest speaker Mayor Phil Clark, a lifelong resident of Elizabethtown, will share the company's history.

Clark will speak about the business's origins with founder Jacob H. Shank, who was born in West Donegal Township in 1879. Shank successfully transformed a small, home-based venture into a thriving extract business operating out of 42 E. High St. Clark will detail the involvement of the Shank family, the ultimate sale of the business following Walter Shank's death in 1958, and its subsequent relocation to Neffsville. The program will culminate with information about the company's modern evolution, leading up to its $100 million sale in 2021.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.
