Program To Focus On Conestoga River

The Lititz Historical Foundation will host a presentation on the Conestoga River on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 1:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz.

Local historian, author and photographer Donald Kautz will give an overview of the history along the Conestoga River. He will examine the historic conditions along the Conestoga, the effects that settlement of the county has had on the river and steps that can be taken to preserve the waterway.

The Conestoga River meanders for 60 miles through the farmlands of Lancaster County. From early Native American inhabitants to the European settlers who made the Conestoga Valley their home, local residents have found sustenance and transportation in the river. Victorian-era resorts and hotels were built along the river, providing new recreational activities as steam power drove innovative forms of transportation and waterpower.

As the region developed and the population grew, the river experienced increased pollution from sewage runoff and industry. Conservation efforts from the end of the 20th century through the present day have aimed to restore the river's beauty and recreational reputation.

Copies of Kautz's book, "The Conestoga River: A History," will also be available for purchase with cash.

This program is free, but donations will be accepted. Registration is required by calling the Lititz Public Library at 717-626-2255.
