Program To Focus on Lincoln's Funeral Train

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a presentation titled "The Lincoln Funeral Train in Pennsylvania" when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, in the Millersville Borough Administration & Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The speaker will be Scott L. Mingus Sr., a multiple award-winning author, retired scientist, and executive in the global specialty paper industry.

The funeral train carrying the remains of the slain President Abraham Lincoln passed through Pennsylvania on April 21 to 22, 1865, and again on April 28. Tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians passed by the coffin as Lincoln lay in state in Harrisburg and Philadelphia, as well as untold numbers who watched the train steam past their communities. Using information he gathered from rare diaries and journals and from eyewitness accounts, Mingus will present a detailed account of the train's passage through the state. He will also discuss the locomotives used, the railroads on which they traveled, the crewmen, and timetables. A question-and-answer session will close the presentation.

Mingus, who writes a blog on the Civil War history of York County, received lifetime achievement awards from the York County History Center and the Camp Curtin Historical Society for his contributions to local Civil War history. His biography of William "Extra Billy" Smith won two national awards for Confederate military history, and The Gettysburg Civil War Round Table presented him and co-author Eric Wittenberg with the 2023 Bachelder-Coddington Award for the best new book on the Gettysburg Campaign, "If We Are Striking for Pennsylvania." The York County resident was also part of the research team that developed the first commercially successful self-adhesive U.S. postage stamps, and he was a pioneer in the early development of bar code labels.
