Program To Focus On Wampum Belts

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to a presentation on "Wampum Belts of Pennsylvania and Penn's Agreements With the Lenape (Delawares) and Other Pennsylvania Native Tribes" when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 9, in Millersville's Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The speaker will be Conestoga resident Barry Lee, a Munsee Native American. Lee is the executive director of the Circle Legacy Center, an organization that promotes and assists Native Americans in southeast Pennsylvania. Lee serves as master of ceremonies for many powwows throughout the year and also is the lead singer of the group Spirit Wing.

Wampum belts, constructed from quahog clam and welk shells, represent a lasting record of the agreements made between Native peoples and the new settlers from Europe. Lee will share historical information, as well as display some replica belts that he will circulate among members of the audience for hands-on inspection. The six-time Native American Music Award nominee also will incorporate some traditional woodland songs in his presentation before its concluding question-and-answer session.

Admission is free, but donations are welcomed. For more information, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before 5 p.m. or at pge8507@aol.com.
